Empty Nest - Day 1

Today is the first day of the Empty Nest.
The day started at 4:45 with Karen’s alarm going off. She slept on the couch because her bed was stacked with boxes. When the alarm didn’t stop, I stumbled out of bed to turn it off. She came down the hall at the same time and growled “It’s packed in a box!” She found it and went back to sleep. I went back to bed but not to sleep.
By 7 AM she and I were on our way to the new digs. It’s a cute little place. A nice starter apartment. Unfortunately ugly brown carpet and avocado appliances. But its there’s! The furniture arrived from Sheely’s shortly after we got there. A beautiful high table with 4 chairs. I love this piece and am awed that they found it! Also delivered was a queen sized bed frame with a deep pillow-top mattress. As soon as the moving guys left, K said “Let’s try it out!” So we both flopped on the bed! So comfy!
We knew the guys would be a while with the truck, so off to Mickey D’s. I had forgotten that it is senior citizen heaven. Now I know where to go pick up guys!
The guys arrived; we unloaded everything and put some stuff away.
Tomorrow the coach and bedding arrive.
So we came back totally exhausted. I fell asleep while they returned the truck. They came back to get K’s car, and she kept coming back, saying “I know I’m forgetting something!” Shortly after she left, I saw she forgot the hair dryer and her pillow!
Later this evening she called. “We’d decided we don’t like the apartment thing, so we’ll be there in 20 minutes!” They came back for their pillows and the hair dryer as well as the lap top and rabbit ears for the TV (their cable isn’t hooked up yet). And 2 bags of miscellaneous groceries: all Karen’s tea, Josh’s cocoa, some fruit, honey, and sugar.
I’m sad, more because I know it’s the end of a big part of my life, but the beginning of another. And the same for Karen. It’s a bittersweet sadness. I know, though, that I’ll be seeing her a lot because there are still things here. We’ve agreed that she will likely call me tomorrow with a list of things to bring over. And I’ll gladly oblige!
